PMU BrEst – PMU Browser and Estimator System

PMU BrEst – PMU Browser and Estimator System

What is it for?

  • Continuous monitoring of the MV distribution network operating state based on synchrophasor measurements from PMU (Phasor Measurement Unit) devices.
  • Steady-state estimation of circular active and reactive power flows arising after closing normally-opened disconnectors in the network.
  • Assessment of feeder loop-closing feasibility during network reconfiguration (e.g. during faulted section isolation).
  • Automatic correction of MV phase rotation errors (phase reversal) and LV phase sequence/position errors with respect to a user-selected reference PMU.
  • Clear visualisation of results via a secured web portal with authenticated access.
PMU Browser module – measured data visualisation and geographical network interface
PMU Estimator – voltage profile visualisation along the main feeder in the geographical interface

How does the system work?

  • PMU Browser – synchrophasor data display and analysis module:
    • display of measurement results from selected PMU devices referred to the MV voltage level via distribution transformer parameters.
    • calculation of monitored parameter differences (phasor differentials) between two selected PMUs.
    • geographical interface with PMU installation location visualisation and section disconnector state indication.
    • automatic phase rotation and phase sequence correction with respect to the selected reference PMU.
  • PMU Estimator – module for steady-state estimation after closing a normally-open disconnectors:
    • construction of a reduced network model comprising the relevant MV feeders/sections.
    • state estimation of current, voltage, and power conditions at the point of closed disconnector.
    • visualisation of voltage, current, and power profiles along the main feeder in charts and in the geographical interface.
    • support for both radially-fed (single-end) and ring-fed (dual-end) feeder configurations.
    • automatic phase rotation and phase sequence correction with respect to the selected reference PMU.
  • Communication infrastructure and network model:
    • PMU devices communicate via IEC 60870-5-104 protocol over a mobile network (LTE).
    • switching device states from the SCADA/DMS system transferred via the RTU7MC3 security gateway.
    • central database for storage of system configuration, input measurement data, and estimation results.
    • web interface accessible via HTTPS from the DSO intranet or through a VPN connection.

Analytical capabilities of the PMU BrEst system:

  • Visualisation of synchronised voltage and current phasors from all integrated PMU devices (at both MV and LV levels).
  • Calculation of measured parameter differentials between two selected PMUs.
  • Automatic phase sequence and phase rotation correction with respect to the reference PMU.
  • Circular power flow estimation after closing a selected normally-opened disconector.
  • Display of voltage, current, and power profiles along the main feeder.
  • Geographical visualisation of the distribution network topology including states of section disconectors.
  • Support for analysis of both radially-fed and ring-fed feeder configurations.

What do you need to procure?

  • PMU devices installed on the LV side of distribution transformers at key network nodes and a reference PMU on the MV busbar of the primary substation.
  • Devices must provide synchronous measurement of three-phase voltages and currents with Class S accuracy (per IEC 61000-4-30) and a time deviation of ≤2 µs (GPS synchronisation).
  • Communication interface supporting IEC 60870-5-104 protocol (1-second phasor reporting rate).
  • Access to current switching device states from the SCADA/DMS system – provided via the RTU7MC3 security gateway.
  • Distribution network model from GIS – line parameters (impedances, lengths, conductor cross-sections), transformer parameters (turns ratio, winding clock number, tap position), and network topology.
  • Server platform for the PMU BrEst system (can be deployed as a physical or virtual machine).

PMU BrEst system infrastructure – interconnection of hardware and software components
PMU device – modular ELVAC RTU7M unit (GPS synchronisation, Class S PQM-S measurement card, LTE communication)

What are the benefits?

  • Network reconfiguration support: circular power flow estimation prior to real closing a normally-opened disconectors enables informed dispatcher decision-making during loop closing, e.g. for fault section isolation.
  • Real-time network state monitoring: continuous synchrophasor-based voltage and current monitoring with geographical interface visualisation.
  • Voltage and loading profile estimation: display of voltage and load current profiles along feeders enables identification of critical points (voltage drops, overloading, unbalance).
  • Phase correction: automatic detection and correction of phase rotation and phase sequence/position errors, applicable during commissioning, transformer replacement, and distribution network development.
  • Modularity and scalability: the system can be expanded with additional PMU devices; existing RTU7M users can enable PMU functionality by adding the PQM-S measurement card and GPS time synchronization.
  • Secured web access: HTTPS access from the DSO intranet or via VPN – no dedicated client software installation required.
  • Open hardware platform: PMU BrEst can also operate with third-party PMU devices, provided they meet Class S measurement accuracy and IEC 60870-5-104 communication requirements.
